Racial Discrimination in Finance Unit

Students will be able to

• Define what wealth means and explain why net worth is a useful metric to evaluate someone’s financial wealth 
• Analyze how key historical and ongoing financial practices have led to modern racial inequities in the United States 
• Consider the role of reparations to redress the harms of slavery and violence against Black Americans and other historically excluded communities

Students will be able to

• Identify how racial discrimination has impacted two key functions of banks: keeping deposits secure and lending money
• Analyze the impacts of historical and ongoing racial discrimination in banking
• Consider strategies to recognize and respond to discriminatory credit practices

Students will be able to

• Explain how land and homeownership contribute to wealth building in the United States
• Analyze historical and current housing practices and policies that have prevented, and continue to prevent, communities of color from generating wealth
• Identify signs of housing discrimination and steps someone can take if they experience discrimination

Students will be able to

• Analyze the relationship between housing segregation and school funding
• Examine how systemic racism has impacted access to higher education and student debt
• Consider the impacts of racial discrimination on employment and wages

Students will be able to

• Create a final product that demonstrates a deep understanding of a particular issue area with the intention to educate others or to mobilize action
