Question of the Day: What percent of 16-19 year olds had a summer job in 2023?

By some measures, the summer of 2023 was one of the best job market for teens since 2008.

Answer: About 1 in 3

Questions:

  • Do you have plans to get a job this summer? If so, describe your plans.
  • Have you seen many Help Wanted signs in local businesses? How would you describe the teen job market in your area?
  • What are some of the benefits of working over the summer?

Here's the ready-to-go slides for this Question of the Day that you can use in your classroom.

 Behind the numbers (Business Insider):

"For businesses seeking workers with flexibility, teenagers are often ideal candidates because they're able to work during the summer and at hourly wages typically lower compared to older, more experienced workers," Pardue said. "On Gusto's platform, we're seeing teenage workers continue to step in and fill the gap during this economic recovery and be an attractive alternative source of workers for businesses who are struggling to navigate an unprecedentedly tight labor market."

Tim Ranzetta

Tim's saving habits started at seven when a neighbor with a broken hip gave him a dog walking job. Her recovery, which took almost a year, resulted in Tim getting to know the bank tellers quite well (and accumulating a savings account balance of over $300!). His recent entrepreneurial adventures have included driving a shredding truck, analyzing executive compensation packages for Fortune 500 companies and helping families make better college financing decisions. After volunteering in 2010 to create and teach a personal finance program at Eastside College Prep in East Palo Alto, Tim saw firsthand the impact of an engaging and activity-based curriculum, which inspired him to start a new non-profit, Next Gen Personal Finance.
