Celebrating Black History Month: The Impact of Housing Policy on Communities of Color
Twice weekly, NGPF is celebrating Black History Month via dedicated posts and student activities on the NGPF blog.
Unlike a lot of our earlier posts where we highlighted the work of a specific Black financial leader, today we are putting a spotlight on how housing policies segregated America and the lasting impact they have on communities of color today.
Featured Resource and Activity Idea: Video - How Home Loans Segregated America
TwoCents, a series by PBS, recently released a video on How Home Loans Segregated America. We’ve EdPuzzle-d this video and inserted comprehension questions along the way so that students can pause and digest the information in chunks.
We’ve also provided some extension questions below to facilitate classroom discussion after students watch the video.
Extension Questions
- How do housing policies impact multiple aspects of peoples' lives?
- Julia mentions that everyones' net worth is a combination of “choice and circumstance.” What does she mean by this?
- In what ways might you have seen the impact of FHA policies, such as redlining, in your life?
NOTE: If you’d like to use the YouTube video itself, you can click on the YouTube icon in the bottom right corner of the EdPuzzle video OR click here.

Sonia Dalal
Sonia has always been passionate about instruction and improving students' learning experiences. She's come a long way since her days as a first grader, when she would "teach" music and read to her very attentive stuffed animals after school. Since then, she has taught students as a K-12 tutor, worked in several EdTech startups in the Bay Area, and completed her Ed.M in Education from the Harvard Graduate School of Education. She is passionate about bringing the high quality personal finance content and instruction she wished she'd received in school to the next generation of students and educators. When she isn't crafting lesson guides or working with teachers, Sonia loves to spend her time singing, being outdoors, and adventuring with family and friends!

When I started working at Next Gen Personal Finance, it's as though my undergraduate degree in finance, followed by ten years as an educator in an NYC public high school, suddenly all made sense.
